Every year John Lewis, a department store in the UK, releases their tear-jerking Christmas advertisement. This year, they took a new approach — they made viewers smile. Check it out:

Customer Director at John Lewis, Craig Inglis, stated, "2016 has certainly been quite a year, so we hope our advert will make people smile. It really embraces a sense of fun and magic, reminding everyone how it feels to give the perfect gift at Christmas."

Talk about taking marketing and turning it on its head! We all anticipated the waterworks upon the release of this year’s advertisement, but were pleasantly surprised by the joy it brought.

Not only has this ad impacted the UK, but the power behind its message crossed the pond and transcended international borders. Thanks to the power of social media, #BustertheBoxer is trending on a global scale. This ad has generated shares, tweets and likes to spread the ad’s central message of giving gifts everyone will love. Several Twitter users have taken this concept into their own hands by creating comical reactions to the ad and showing off their own dog’s mad trampoline skills!

This shift in advertising has brought joy to our four-legged friends. If you search the hashtag #BustertheBoxer on all platforms, you will discover videos of pets engaging in various ways, including excitedly jumping up and down while watching the ad. These furry friends had major pet envy, which was reflected through their attempt to imitate Buster the Boxer in the commercial.

While Buster the Boxer is the star of the 2016 Christmas advertisement, the UK brand is taking him and his furry friends beyond the screen and into viewer’s homes. Visitors to the department store can buy stuffed animal versions of the jumpers as well as take their turn virtually jumping with them through a VR headset! Don’t worry, you can get them online too.
