Community and privacy are the core goals of the latest Facebook and Instagram updates, and while that sounds great from a consumer standpoint, any sort of change can be concerning to communication professionals and clients alike. Rest assured, the most recent changes include some of the most innovative and exciting ways to interact with consumers, and if used correctly, could be game changing for you and your business. After Zuckerberg’s announcement at the F8 2019 annual conference, here’s a quick rundown of everything you need to know:
Fresh Look for Web and Mobile App
FB5, the 5th major redesign of Facebook, will make communities the focus of the beloved social media platform. You may have already noticed your mobile app looking a little different, and that’s because this feature has already started rolling out as of May 1st. The simpler look is said to create a more immersive user experience, with an emphasis on Facebook groups. The desktop version will begin rolling out over the next few months.
The new Facebook update is designed to put a large focus on public and private Facebook groups. With tens of millions of active Facebook groups currently, the new tools will help make it easier to participate in groups, discover new groups, and support specific communities. For example, new health support groups give users the option to post anonymously, while job groups will have a template for employers to post openings and for job seekers to apply directly through the platform.
Emphasis on Upcoming Events
The Facebook update includes a new events tab with a location tool to showcase upcoming activities in the surrounding area.
New Messenger Features
What was once merely a replacement for AIM messaging (minus the embarrassing AOL screennames) has turned into a unique platform that creates closer ties between consumers, businesses, and developers. With a newer, faster mobile app and a downloadable app for desktop, Facebook Messenger is changing the way we communicate with one another. New features include an option to watch videos with friends while messaging/video chatting, group chats with close friends, and advanced tools for business that will allow potential customers to book an appointment or fill out a lead generation form.
New Donation Sticker
The Instagram update allows both users and businesses to raise money for nonprofits directly through Instagram Stories. Starting today, there’s an option to add a “donate now” button to your post and link it to a cause close to your heart.
Shopping Tools for Creators
Starting next week, users will be able to shop looks from influencers or “creators” directly on Instagram, without having to leave the platform. Users can simply tap the photo, get the details on the product in the image, and check out all in one place.
With the proper strategy and implementation, these new tools can make a huge difference in your overall marketing campaigns. Not sure where to go from here? Feel free to contact us to set up a consultation or shoot us an email at info@BowStern.com with questions.
